How much does shed, garage or barn demolition cost in Louisiana?
Shed demolition costs $500 to $2,000 on average, according to Hometown Demolition Contractors. Fixr puts garage demolition at $1,600 to $6,000. Hometown Demolition lists barns at $1,500 to $10,000 with debris disposal, and carports at $2 to $6 per square foot. Those are published national figures.
Around Acadiana a small wood shed with no slab typically runs less than a concrete garage on a slab. There is less to tear down and haul. A real number for your building needs an on-site look, and the estimate is free.
What does it cost to tear down a shed?
Shed removal runs $3.50 to $12.50 per square foot, according to Bob Vila. Citing Angi and HomeAdvisor, Bob Vila puts it at $50 to $100 per hour. Hometown Demolition Contractors says the average shed demolition falls between $500 and $2,000. Size, contents, the slab and the way in move the price inside those ranges.
What is inside the shed can matter as much as its size. Hometown Demolition reports an empty, easy-to-reach 80 square foot shed in Paramus, New Jersey, at $800. A shed the same size in New London, Connecticut, filled with old tools and shelving, cost $2,850.
For shed and garage demolition around New Iberia, we bring a compact excavator and a compact track loader. The debris leaves in roll-off containers or dump trailers.
What does garage demolition cost?
Fixr puts garage demolition at $1,600 to $6,000. It says most people pay around $3,500 for a 24 by 24 foot detached garage, with the waste hauled off. Fixr’s per square foot range is $4 to $8. Hometown Demolition Contractors lists garage demolition at $1,000 to $3,000 with debris disposal.
Bigger garages cost more, Fixr says, since they take more labor and leave more debris. Concrete and brick are harder to bring down than wood.
A detached garage costs less to remove than an attached one, which shares a wall with the house. Fixr puts a 24 by 24 foot detached garage at $2,300 to $3,450. An attached one runs $3,500 to $4,600. Tearing down the whole house is its own job, priced in our house demolition cost guide.
| Garage | Published range | Publisher |
|---|---|---|
| 12 by 20 feet (240 sq ft) | $960 to $1,920 | Fixr |
| 24 by 24 feet (576 sq ft) | $2,305 to $4,610 | Fixr |
| Detached, 24 by 24 feet | $2,300 to $3,450 | Fixr |
| Attached, 24 by 24 feet | $3,500 to $4,600 | Fixr |
| Wood, 24 by 24 feet | $1,500 to $3,500 | Fixr |
| Metal, 24 by 24 feet | $2,000 to $3,000 | Fixr |
| Concrete, 24 by 24 feet | $2,500 to $6,000 | Fixr |
| Brick, 24 by 24 feet | $4,500 to $7,000 | Fixr |
What does barn demolition cost?
Hometown Demolition Contractors puts barn demolition at $1,500 to $10,000, debris disposal included. It lists $5 to $10 per square foot as the average, and says some jobs reach $25,000. Size, access, the foundation and hazardous materials such as asbestos or lead paint all move the price.
In Missouri, Hometown Demolition reports a 1,200 square foot pole barn of steel and wood torn down for $4,000. On a pole barn the posts are set in the ground, and they come out with the excavator. Taking a barn apart by hand to save the wood can double the cost, or more, it says. An old mobile home on the same land is priced on its own, in our mobile home demolition cost guide.
What does carport removal cost?
Hometown Demolition Contractors puts carport demolition at $2 to $6 per square foot on average. The materials, and whether the foundation comes out too, move that number. A metal carport with posts resting on the ground is lighter work than one with posts set in concrete.
For a small metal building, the closest published figure is Fixr’s metal garage. It puts a 24 by 24 foot metal garage at $2,000 to $3,000.
What makes the price go up around Acadiana?
A slab under the building and a big load of debris both raise the price. Fixr says a concrete slab foundation can add up to $1,500 to a garage teardown. Bob Vila puts disposal and cleanup at $300 to $1,800, depending on the debris load.
Slab or no slab. Some people keep the slab for a new shed or a parking spot. A slab removed on its own is priced in our concrete removal cost guide.
The way in. Bob Vila says a shed right off the driveway likely adds no extra charge, while a hard-to-reach one costs more. After heavy rain a soft yard ruts under a loaded trailer, so a dry spell helps.
Debris and disposal. Louisiana permits Type III facilities for construction and demolition debris, and that is where the load goes. Bob Vila says a separate hauling service can run $400 to $800 per truckload.
Power and water. Your power company or an electrician disconnects the power before the teardown, and a plumber handles any water line. Bob Vila puts an electrician at $50 to $100 per hour.
Asbestos and lead paint. Bob Vila notes that old sheds may contain asbestos, and puts its removal at about $2,000. Fixr says asbestos or lead-based paint can add $400 to $5,000 to the cleanup.

| Demolition permit, most states | $50 to $100 | Fixr |

What permits does a shed or garage teardown need near New Iberia?
Inside New Iberia city limits, the city says to contact the New Iberia Inspection Department for a demolition permit. Its base fee is $35.00 per structure. When the permit is issued, you state your means of disposing of the construction debris. Outside city limits, the Iberia Parish Permit Office covers structures in the parish.
Louisiana 811. Louisiana’s dig law counts the wrecking, razing, moving or removing of any building as demolition. So a shed or barn teardown needs notice too. The excavator or demolisher puts it in at least 48 hours ahead, and no more than 120 hours ahead. We put that notice in before the machine starts.
Asbestos. LDEQ’s asbestos rule for demolition says any residential building with four or fewer dwelling units is exempt. Conditions apply, listed on the same page. The wording does not name a detached shed, garage or barn. Suspect siding or roofing goes to an asbestos abatement contractor accredited by LDEQ before the teardown.
No burning. LDEQ publishes a list of materials that should never be burned, and buildings and mobile homes are on it. Burning construction debris can bring a fine, LDEQ warns.
Is it cheaper to tear down a shed yourself?
It can save money, mostly on the cleanup. Fixr’s low end, $960 for a 240 square foot detached garage, has you rent a dumpster and get rid of the waste yourself. Fixr puts that dumpster at $200 to $550. Bob Vila does not recommend the shed teardown itself as a DIY job.
The risk is an uncontrolled collapse, Bob Vila says, along with stepping on rusty nails. A shed in good shape can be sold instead, with the buyer hauling it off, Bob Vila suggests.
How do you get a real number for your shed, garage or barn?
A real number needs an on-site look. We check the building’s size and what it sits on. We also look at the way in for the machines and the haul to the disposal site. That look turns the published ranges above into one price, and the estimate is free.
Our garage and barn teardowns cover sheds and carports too. A building a storm already knocked flat is a storm debris cleanup job. A small commercial building falls under our demolition services.
